80% of the area under greenhouse cultivation is dedicated to vegetable and summer crops

Gholamreza Taghavi, director general of the Office of Greenhouse Affairs, Medicinal Plants and Edible Mushrooms, said in an interview with the Industry, Trade and Agriculture Economic Group of the Young Journalists Club, noting that we have more than 7,000 hectares of land for greenhouse flower and plant production. The base produces more than 4 billion flower and potted branches annually.

He added: “In the field of flower and plant exports, more than 100% growth has occurred in terms of value.”

Taghavi said that a part of the flower and plant export terminal was opened in Tehran last year, adding that due to the good reception of this sector, it is expected that exports in the field of flowers and plants will increase this year.

The official said the country’s greenhouse area is more than 15,000 hectares, adding that more than 80 percent of the area under cultivation of greenhouse crops includes vegetables and summer crops, and the rest in ornamental plants and other fruit crops.

He continued: “Despite the increase in production costs due to exchange rate fluctuations, not only have we not lost producers in the greenhouse crop development program, but we are also facing an increase in demand in this sector because some greenhouse crops such as vegetables and quality due to Proper quality and standard are economically justified.

The director general of the Office of Greenhouses and Medicinal Plants said that 2,700 hectares of greenhouses were built in the country last year. “This year, we will expand the level of greenhouses in the country to more than 5,000 hectares, which we hope will be possible due to developments in exports.” Let’s make these plans come true.

He declared the development of greenhouse crops as one of the programs of the resistance economy and added: in order to implement the policy of the resistance economy, the development of cultivation in controlled environments should take place in more than 48,000 hectares.

Regarding the latest statistics on the amount of flood damage to the country’s greenhouses, Taghavi said: “Due to the recent floods, greenhouses and greenhouse products have suffered the least damage in some provinces of the country.”

In the end, the official clarified: The main part of the damage was related to the open space, especially in Khuzestan province, in the field of flowers and plants, which is why some of the wooden greenhouses were damaged.
